Living sustainably is my jam, but puritanism doesn’t help if we want to get others on board. Demanding perfection alienates people and, dismisses the systemic problems that brought us to this point in the first place.

As an environmentalist, I talk and walk this issue — to the best of my ability. And that’s the point. We exist in a predetermined system that holds us in its unsustainable grasp. Pushing past the roadblocks on an individual level takes serious effort, so I genuinely applaud every attempt. But, The Puritans are not so quick to applause. The zero-wasters, the vegans, the wealthy pat-themselves-on-the-back electric vehicle drivers. For them, anything less than the same is failure, and yet they themselves are failing to see the problem on a systemic scale. Victim-blaming is unhelpful and needs to stop.
